  • On 25 April 2016, the Parliament has passed the Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to remove right given to Sahjdhari Sikhs to vote in the elections to members of the Board and the Committees.
  • The amendment bill first was passed in the Rajya Sabha in March 2016 and later in the Lok Sabha in April 2016.
  • By this Bill section 49, and section 92 of  ‘Gurdwara Act, 1925’ has been amended. According to which those will not be entitled to vote in Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and various gurdwara management committee elections who-

-trim or shave their beard or hair and live like Sahjdhari Sikhs,
-smoke,
-consume alcohol.
