  • In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on 3th January 2019, by the Union Minister, Dr Jitendra Singh informed that twenty one nuclear power reactors, with an installed capacity of 15700 MW are under implementation & anticipated for progressive completion by the year 2031.
  • At present, 9 nuclear power reactors are targeted for completion by 2024-25 and 12 more nuclear power reactors have been given administrative approval as well as financial sanction in June 2017.
  • The unit size of indigenous Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) has already been enhanced from 220 MW to 540 MW.
  • Moreover, Light Water Reactors of 1000 MW have also been introduced with foreign cooperation.

Nuclear Power in India:

  • Nuclear power is the fifth-largest source of electricity in India after coal, gas, hydroelectricity and wind power.
  • At present, India has 22 nuclear reactors in operation in 7 nuclear power plants .Total installed nuclear power capacity in India is 6780 MW.
  • In India, there are seven Atomic Power Stations located in Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
