  • On 5 February 2016, Union Minister in-charge of Health &Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda in Manipur launched a new initiative called ‘Project Sunrise’ to tackle the rising HIV prevalence in Northeastern States, especially among people injecting drugs.
  • The project will be implemented over 5 years during 2015-2020.
  • The National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), Centers for Disease Control, FHI 360 and several non-governmental organizations will cooperate in the Sunrise project.
  • Project Sunrise is launched to complement the ongoing efforts of National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), Ministry of Health, Government of India and the State Governments.
  • The technical and financial support for the Project will be provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
  • Implementation will be done by ‘Family Health International 360’ (FIH 360) (a not for profit human development organization).
  • According to latest government reports, NE States like Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland account for highest adult (15-49 years) HIV prevalence in the country.
  • Estimates of 2015 reportedly show Manipur tops the list with adult HIV prevalence (1.15 per cent) against the national average of 0.26 per cent.
