Related Fact :

  • On 1st March, 2017, The National Family Health Survey 2015-16 (NFHS-4), the fourth in the NFHS series, was released by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
  • It provides information on population, health and nutrition for India and each State / Union territory. NFHS-4, for the first time, provides district-level estimates for many important indicators.
  • International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai was the nodal agency to conduct NFHS-4 like the previous rounds of the survey.
  • The main objective of each successive round of the NFHS has been to provide essential data on health and family welfare and emerging issues in this area.
  • NFHS-4 data will be useful in setting benchmarks and examining the progress in health sector the country has made over time. Besides providing evidence for the effectiveness of the ongoing programmes, the data from NFHS-4 help in identifying need for new programmes with area specific focus.
  • As per the National Family Health Survey 2015-16:
  • Sex ratio of the total population (females per 1,000 males) is 991 compared to 1,000 in NFHS-3 in 2005-06
  • Number of Households with electricity has increased to 88.2 percent in 2015-16 compared to 67.9 percent in 2005-06.
  • Women literacy was reported at 68.4 percent in 2015-16 in contrast to 55.1 percent in 2005-06.
  • Infant mortality rate has declined to 41 from 57 during this period.
  • Under- five child mortality rate is still high at 50 compared to 74 in 2005-06.
