  • On June 5, 2017, Montenegro became the 29th member of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) upon depositing its instrument of accession with the US State Department in Washington DC.
  • Montenegro signed the Accession Protocol in May 2016, after which all 28 national parliaments voted to ratify Montenegro’s membership.
  • Montenegro’s accession to the Alliance is NATO’s first enlargement since 1 April 2009, when Albania and Croatia joined the Alliance.
  • NATO is an alliance of countries from Europe and North America. It provides a unique link between these two continents, enabling them to consult and cooperate in the field of defence and security, and conduct multinational crisis-management operations together.
  • NATO is committed to the principle of collective defence enshrined in Article 5 of the Washington Treaty.
  • Montenegro, which means “Black Mountain”, is south-east European country. Montenegro emerged as a sovereign state after more than 55% of the population opted for independence in a May 2006 referendum.
  • The vote heralded the end of the former Union of Serbia and Montenegro, which itself was created only three years earlier out of the remnant of the former Yugoslavia.
