Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the area of outer space

Question:  Recently Union Cabinet has been apprised of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)  on cooperation in the area of outer space between-

(b) ISRO and KISR
(c) ISRO and CNSA

Related facts:

  • On 20 January 2016 The Union Cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has been apprised of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Department of Space / Indian Space Research Organization (DOS/ISRO) and Kuwait Institute of Scientific Research (KISR).
  • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) is signed on cooperation in the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes.
  • The MoU will enable pursuing potential interest in following areas in both cooperative and commercial mode:

(1) Use of data from Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) satellites by KISR for initiating a few research and application projects.
(2) Training and
(3) Building and launching of remote sensing and communication satellites on commercial terms.

  • The MoU will lead to setting up of a Joint Working Group, drawing members from ISRO and KISR.
  • This will further work out the plan of action including the time-frame and the means of implementing this MoU.
  • This Cooperation with KISR through this MoU will lead to developing a joint activity in the field of application of space technology for the benefit of humanity.
  • The MoU will provide impetus to explore newer research activities and application possibilities in the field like
  1. Remote sensing of the earth
  2. Satellite communication
  3. Satellite navigation space science and
  4. Exploration of outer space.
