  • On December 7th, 2017, Kumbh Mela- India has been inscribed on the Representative List of the “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” by UNESCO.
  • The inclusion on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity was done in the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage meeting in Jeju, South Korea.
  • It is remarkable that inscription is the third in two years following ‘Yoga’ and ‘Nouroz’.
  • According to mythology, gods and the demons fight for a pot of nectar (Amrit Kumbh): the nectar of immortality and in the ensuing struggle, a few drops of the precious nectar fell on Allahabad, Nasik, Haridwar and Ujjain.
  • Since then, the Kumbh Mela has been held in all these places, alternately, every 12 years.
  • The Ardh or half Kumbh is held every six years on the banks of Sangam.
