  • On 23 May 2016 Jayalalithaa was sworn in as Tamil Nadu 19th Chief Minister by Governor K. Rosaiah at the Madras University’s Centenary Hall.
  • This is Jayalalithaa’s second consecutive term as Chief Minister of the state and sixth overall.
  • It may be recalled that her party All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) won the state elections getting 134 out of the 232 seats in the Tamil Nadu.
  • She started her political career in 1982 by joining All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which was founded by M. G Ramachandran.
  • Firstly in 1984 she was elected to the Rajya Sabha.
  • She was elected to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly in 1989 and became the first woman to be elected Leader of the Opposition.
  • In 1991 ADMK alliance with the Congress won 225 out of the 234 seats contested.
  • Following the victory she became the first female, and the youngest, chief minister, of Tamil Nadu.
  • Previously, she served as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu from 24.06.1991 to 12.05.1996 (1st time), in 14.05.2001 to 21.09.2001 (2nd time), from 02.03.2002 to 12.05.2006 (3rd time), from 16.05.2011 to 27.09.2014 (4th time) and 23.05.2015 to 19.05.2016 (5th time).
