  • In November 2017, the Central Government approved the establishment of India’s first mega coastal economic zone in the Jawaharlal Nehru port of Maharashtra.

  • About 45 companies of telecom, auto and IT sectors will soon bid for 200 hectares of land for setting up of manufacturing units in this area.
  • For the first phase of this scheme, total investment of Rs.15, 000 crores and target of creation of more than 1.5 lakh jobs has been set.
  • Its aim is to attract big companies interested in providing services to export companies because they will also bring in technology, capital, good management and global market connectivity.
  • With the development of this sector, it will help in creating an ecosystem for the development of small and mid-capitalization companies.
  • Last year, the Union Cabinet had approved the setting up of 14 mega coastal economic zones under the Sagarmala project.
