  • On October 29, 2018; the country’s first engine-less train, Known as Train 18, will be tested on the tracks. After trial outside factory it will be handed over to Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) for further trials. Train 18 is developed by Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory in 18 months.
  • Widely regarded as the successor to the Shatabdi Express the train is capable of running at a speed of 160 kmph and comes with technical features for enhanced quick acceleration




  • According ICF General Manager Sudhanshu Mani the prototype of the train cost nearly Rs 100 crore.
  • This train is run by a self-propulsion module without a separate engine. Train 18 has diffused lighting, automatic doors and footsteps besides GPS-based Passenger Information System. The swanky 16-coach prototype without a locomotive (engine) will reduced the travel time upto 15 % as compared to the Shatabdi.
