Government announces first batch of 20 smart cities from 11 States and Delhi

Ques: On January 28, 2016 Minister of Urban Development   M. Venkaiah Naidu announced the name first 20 cities to be developed under the Smart City project. Name the state from which maximum numbers of city are included?

  • On 28 January 2016, Minister of Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu announced the name of first 20 cities to be developed under the Smart City project.
  • It includes 3 (Maximum from any state) cities from Madhya Pradesh namely Jabalpur, Indore and Bhopal.
  • In the list of the 20 cities  Bhubaneswar (Orissa), Pune (Maharashtra), Jaipur (Rajasthan), Surat (Gujarat), Cochin (Kerala), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh), Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Solapur (Maharashtra), Davanagere (Karnataka), Indore (Madhya Pradesh), New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) (New Delhi), Combattore (Tamil Nadu), Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), Belagavi (Karnataka), Udaipur (Rajasthan), Guwahati (Assam), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Ludhiana (Punjab), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) are included.
  • Venkhaih Naidu informed that the 20 winning cities and towns have proposed a total investment of Rs. 50,802 cr over five years.
  • In the next phase of this project, the government will announce the name 40 cities to be development smart cities.
  • These cities will be developed to have basic infrastructure such as assured water and power supply, sanitation and solid waste management, efficient urban mobility and public transport, IT connectivity, e-governance and citizen participation.
