  • On November 12th, 2018, the Global Cooling Innovation Summit was inaugurated by Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan in New Delhi.
  • First-of-its-kind solutions-focused event, the two-day summit has been organized to explore the avenues to outstay the climate threat that comes from the increasing demand from room air conditioners.
  • John Loughhead Vice-Chair, Mission Innovation Steering Committee and Iain Campbell, Senior Fellow at Rocky Mountain Institute also graced the occasion along with speakers from around the world, including innovators, philanthropists, venture capitalists, and other industry leaders.





  • The Global Cooling Prize has been initiated as an international competition in the two days Global Cooling Innovation Summit for incentivizing the development of a residential cooling technology that will have at least five times less climate impact than the standard Room Air Conditioning (RAC).
  • Over the course of the two-year competition will have prize money of US $3 million for Breakthrough Innovations in Cooling Technology. The prize will be supported by Mission Innovation, the Government of India through the Department of Science and Technology and its partner organizations.

Some other facts:

  • There are currently 1.2 billion room air conditioning units in service around the world which expected to increase to 4.5 billion by the year 2050. India alone will see over 1 billion air conditioning units by the year 2050.




  • Comfort cooling represents one of the largest end-use risks to the climate as it puts the most vulnerable populations at risk and consumes great amount of energy.
