  • The Global Competitiveness Report 2017-18 was released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Geneva on September 26, 2017.
  • The Report assesses the competitiveness landscape of 137 economies on 12 pillars of competitiveness, providing unique insight into the drivers of their productivity and prosperity. 
  • These 12 pillars are -institutions, infrastructure, comprehensive economic environment, health and primary education, higher education and training, skilled labor markets, skilled goods markets, financial market development, technology readiness, market size, business expertise and innovation.
  • Under the Global Competitiveness Index-2017-18, Switzerland (Score-5.9) has remained at the top for the sixth consecutive year.
  • Switzerland is followed by United States (Score-5.9), Singapore (Score-5.7) Third, Netherlands (Score-5.7) Fourth and Germany (Score-5.7) fifth.
  • The lowest place in the index was of Yemen 137th (Score-2.9), followed by Mozambique 136th (Score-2.9), Chad 135th (Score-3.0) and Liberia at 134th (Score 3.1).
  • In this index, India is ranked 40th this year (Score-4.6) among total 137 countries.
  • Last year India was at 39th place in 138 countries.
  • India’s neighboring countries position- Sri Lanka 85th, Nepal 88th, Bangladesh 99th and Pakistan remained at 115th place in this index.
  • Among BRICS countries apart from India, China ranked 27th, Russia 38th, South Africa 61st, and Brazil remained at 80th place.
  • Among other major countries of the world, the United Kingdom ranked 8th, Japan 9th, Canada 14th, UAE 17th and France 22nd.
