Related facts:

  • The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet in its historic meet in Prayagraj (Allahabad) approved the construction of Ganga Expressway on January 30, 2019.
  • The meeting was chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. It was for the first time that such meeting held outside Lucknow after 1962 when the UP cabinet meeting took place at Nainital (now in Uttarakhand) during the regime of then Congress CM Govind Ballabh Pant.

Highlights of the project:

  • The 600 kilometer four lane expressway which can be developed further to six lanes. It will be the longest Expressway in the world after completion.
  • The project will be constructed with an estimated cost of Rs 36,000 crore.
  • This expressway will connect Eastern UP with holy city of Prayagraj (Allahabad). The expressway will connect Meerut, Amroha, Bulandshahr, Budaun, Shahjahanpur, Kannauj, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Pratapgarh and will end connecting Prayagraj.
  • The Expressway will have an acquisition of 6,556 hectare land. Eight rail over bridges (ROB) and 18 flyovers will be constructed in the project.

Other projects:

  • The Cabinet also approved much awaited Bundelkhand Expressway. This will be 296.26 kms long and procured area will 3641.62 hectare, the width of the expressway will be 110 mts and will constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 14,716.26 crore.
  • The expressway will start from Jhansi, Mirzapur National Highway and will pass through districts like Banda, Hamirpur, Mahoba, Jalaun, Auraiya and Etawah and will join the Agra-Lucknow Expressway.
  • The Cabinet also cleared the Gorakhpur Link Expressway (Four Lane) will be 91 kilometers long and total effective area will be 987.48 hectare. The cost of civil work is estimated to be 5555.16 crores.
