  • On 15 February 2016 the first cargo train from China to Iran arrived in capital city of Iran, Tehran.
  • It had left Yiwu city in east China’s Zhejiang Province on January 28.
  • The train, also referred to as Silk Road train, has passed through Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan to Iran, travelling a distance of 10,399 kilometers.
  • The cargo train per day journey was about 700 kilometers and it is carried 32 containers each with a capacity of 40 square feet.
  • This is a part of a Chinese initiative to revive the ancient Silk Road through which traders traveled from Europe to East Asia.
  • In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping introduced the new ‘Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Maritime Silk Road’ initiative to connect stronger logistics networks with Asia, Africa and Europe by building more roads, railways and airports.
