  • On May 18th, 2018, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs (Independent Charge) Hardeep Singh Puri announced the expansion has expanded its ambit “The National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) to cover some additional sectors in the informal economy.
  • The National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM), seeks to reduce poverty and vulnerability of the urban poor through access to gainful self-employment and skilled wage employment opportunities.
  • This announcement was made at a Workshop on “Making Cities Work for All: Integrating the informal economy organised by National Institute of Urban Affairs in collaboration with Women in the Informal Employment.
  • In addition to providing social security, strengthening tenure security and improving basic infrastructure and public services in informal settlements where urban poor are concentrated, these initiatives are likely to reduce vulnerability and improve working conditions.
  • Informal employment includes all those workforce who are neither covered by any social security net nor have any form of job security and the informal sector includes enterprises that take the form of unincorporated partnerships and proprietorships (having less than 10 workers).
  • The National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) was started by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in the year 2015.
  • Its purpose is to provide social security, reduce poverty and developing skill among the urban poor and increase self-employment.
