  • On March 1, 2017; the Central Government took a major decision to sanction projects worth Rs 1050 crore to prepare a sewage treatment framework to prevent sewage pollution in Ganga in Patna.
  • This project will be implemented under Namami Ganges Program.
  • This amount will be spent to make two sewage treatment plant (SDT), renewal of existing STP, construction of two pumping stations and on laying 400 km new underground sewage network.
  • Under the project, the contract for laying of STP and laying of new underground sewage network in the zone of Saidpur area of Patna city has been given to UEM India Private Limited and Jyoti Buildtech Pvt.
  • Both companies will undertake the construction of STP of 60 MLD capacity and laying new underground sewage network (227 km) from the total amount of 600 crores in this zone.
  • All other firms Larsen & Turbo Ltd, Voltas Ltd and GAA Germany JV will allocate Rs. 450 crore for different projects in the city’s Beur area.
  • These companies will be working with this amount to construct the STP (Capacity 23 MLD), Renovation of existing STP (capacity 20 MLD) and new underground sewage network (about 180 km).
  • In addition to this, the construction of major pumping stations of 83 MLD and 50 MLD in Saidpur and Beur area are also included in its jurisdiction.
  • The contract includes the cost of operation and maintenance of STP and sewage network for a period of 10 years.
  • The objective of these projects is not only to improve the existing sewage system of Patna but to the next decade, the target of sewage treatment is also seen in the view of the urban population.
  • The National Clean Ganga Mission will monitor the progress of construction work.
  • 100 square kilometers Spread over more than the areas of Patna, the city is divided into six sewerage areas – Digha, Beur, Saidpur, Kankadbagh, Pahadi and Karmali Chak.
  • There is a possibility of contracting for sewage related projects in Karmali Chak area soon.
