  • India on 15 January 2016 celebrated the 68th Army Day.
  • On this day, 69 years ago, Lieutenant General (later Field Marshal) K. M. Cariappa took over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Army of a newly formed India.
  • He took over from General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India on 15 January 1949.
  • To mark the occasion, General Dalbir Singh, Chief of the Army Staff reviewed the Parade at Army Parade Ground, Delhi Cantonment.
  • He also awarded fifteen Sena Medals (including five posthumously) for individual acts of Gallantry and thirteen COAS Unit Citations for commendable performance of their respective units.
