  • University of Mysore hosted the prestigious 103rd edition of Indian Science Congress from January 3 to 7, 2016 at its campus.
  • The Indian Science Congress is being hosted in Karnataka after 13 years and in Mysuru after 34 years, previously it was held in 1982.
  • The Science Congress was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 3, 2016.
  • During the inaugural speech Prime Minister gave a new mantra comprising five Es – “Economy, Environment, Energy, Empathy and Equity”.
  • The 103rd Science Congress was held under the presidentship of Dr. Ashok Kumar Saxena.
  • The theme of this edition of the Congress is “Science and Technology for Indigenous Development in India.
  • In addition to well-known scientists from across the world it was attended by Prof John B Gurdon, UK, Nobel in 2012 for Medicine, Prof Manjul Bhargava, USA, Fields Medal (Nobel Equivalent) in 2014, Prof David J Gross, USA, Nobel in 2004 for Physics, Prof Dan Shechtman, Israel, Nobel in 2011 for Chemistry, Prof Serge Haroche, France, Nobel in 2012 for Physics and Arthur B. McDonald, Canada, Nobel in 2015 for Physics.
  • Eminent Indian Scientists like Prof C N R Rao, Prof Kasturirangan and Prof Goverdhan Mehta and others also delivered lectures and expressed their views on the science development in the country.
  • As part of Indian Science Congress, the Children Science Congress was inaugurated by Nobel Laureate Prof. John B. Gurdon, (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2012) on January 4
  • The 5thWomen’s Science Congress was inaugurated by HRD Minster Smt Smriti Zubin Irani at the Crawford Hall on January 4, 2016.
  • The 9thScience Communicators Meet also held, it is an initiative for Science communicators for professional growth, this Sammelan will focus on the theme “Science and Technology for Indigenous Development in India”.
  • On January 7, 2016 General Meeting of the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) and closing ceremony of 103rdIndian Science Congress was held.
  • Over 5000 speakers delivered talks and a total of 12500 delegates and 500 Scientists participated at the 103rd Indian Science Congress.
  • Over 150 institutions from around India and abroad took part in the meet.
  • It was declared that the next (104th) annual Indian Science Congress will be held between Jan 3rd to Jan 7th, 2017 at SRM University in Chennai.
