  • The rare phenomena of twin cyclone – ‘Luban’ and ‘Titli’ – occurring at the same time, over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal respectively, are marked after 40 years.
  • The Indian National Centre for Oceanic Information Services (INCOIS) has forecasted about the cyclone TITLI in Bay of Bengal.




  • This storm has impacted the Gopalpur and Kalingpatanam in Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh on 11th
  • Luban storm is a severe cyclonic storm over the westcentral Arabian Sea and is likely to move towards Yemen and south Oman coasts by Sunday.
  • The onset of Northeast Monsoon may happen only after the life cycle of these systems are completed.




Naming cyclones:

  • Hurricanes, typhoons, cyclones are all the same, different names are given for tropical storms in different parts of the world as such,  Hurricane in the Atlantic, Typhoon in the Pacific and Cyclone in the Indian Ocean. If the speed of the storm’s wind reaches or crosses 74 mph, it is then classified into a hurricane, cyclone or typhoon. Storm get name if it achieve the speed of 39 mph.




  • The purpose of naming Cyclone is to make easier for people to understand and remember the tropical cyclones/hurricane in a region, thus to facilitate disaster risk awareness, preparedness, management and reduction.

Guidelines for naming cyclones

  • A name should be short and readily understood when broadcast.
  • The names must also be neutral, not culturally sensitive and it should not convey any unintended and potentially inflammatory meaning. The name of the storm is usually retired if it has caused widespread death and destruction.
