- On May 30th, 2018, Ministry of Railways conducted a one day workshop “Mission Raftar” in New Delhi.
- This mission aimed at raising the average speed of freight trains and coaching trains.
- The aim of the mission is to increase the average speed of freight and passenger trains to 25 km / h in the next five years.
- The average speed of freight trains is 24 km. / h while the average speed of passenger trains (excluding suburban trains) is 44 km. / h.
- The main railway route under the Golden Quadrilateral is Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Howrah, Howrah-Chennai, Chennai-Mumbai and Howrah-Mumbai.
- These routes operate 58 percent freight traffic and 52 percent passenger traffic, which is only 15 percent of the railway network.
- The workshop was inaugurated by Shri Rajen Gohain, Minister of State for Railways & Shri Ashwani Lohani, Chairman, Railway Board.
- Also, host of issues ranging from punctuality, rolling stock, removing bottlenecks in terms of traffic, elimination of Unmanned Level crossings were discussed.

- Minister also stated that coal loading was highest i.e. 555 MT in 2017-18.
- In last three months, 18.7% increase is witnessed in coal loading. Ministry of Railways & Coal is coordinating well so as to ensure there is no shortage of coal in power plants.
