PM launches “Setu Bharatam” – a programme for bridge building to ensure seamless travel on National Highways

  • On 4 March 2016 the Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched “Setu Bharatam” Programme in New Delhi.
  • The programme aims at making all national highways Railway Level Crossing free by 2019.
  • Under this programme 208 new road over bridges (ROB) / road under bridges (RUB) are envisaged for construction at the cost of Rs 20,800 Crore.
  • It includes 33 in Andhra Pradesh, 12 in Assam, 20 in Bihar, five in Chhattisgarh, eight in Gujarat, 10 in Haryana, five in Himachal Pradesh, 11 in Jharkhand, 17 in Karnataka, 4 in Kerala, 6 in Madhya Pradesh, 12 in Maharashtra, 4 in Odisha, 10 in Punjab, 9 in Rajasthan, 9 in Tamil Nadu, 2 in Utarakhand, 9 in Uttar Pradesh and 22 in West Bengal.
  • Additionally, 1500 bridges will be widened, rehabilitated or replaced at the cost of Rs 30,000 crores.
