About pingali venkayya–
- He was born on August 2, 1876 in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh; he was a hard believer in Gandhian principles and served as a soldier in the British army in South Africa during the Anglo Boer war in Africa.
- He was a designer of Indian National Tricolor.
- He had a Ph.D in geology and was expert in mining.
National flag evolution–
- In every session of the congress between 1918 and 1921, Pingali Venkayya raised the matter of having an own flag.
- He met with Mahatma Gandhi once again (previously, he met him in the Anglo Boer war) in Vijayawada and showed him his various designs of the flag.
- Gandhi requested (due to the need for a national flag) Venkayya to design a completely new flag at the congress meeting in 1921.
- Initially, he designed the flag with saffron and green colours, but later he added a third colour- white with a spinning wheel at the centre. Addition of spinning wheel was suggested by Lala Hans Raj Sondhi.
- In congress session of 1931, the flag was officially adopted.
