• On 20th February, 2017 Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster was appointed as the new national security adviser, replacing the ousted Michael Flynn.
• Retired Army Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, who has been serving as acting national security adviser, will return to his role as the National Security Council chief of staff.
• The national security adviser serves as the chief in-house counselor to the president on national security. The position does not require Senate confirmation.
• Lt. Gen McMaster is widely known as smart, intense and fiercely outspoken.
• He is a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point and commanded troops during the first Gulf War.
• He has received the Silver Star for his role commanding a tank during the Battle of 73 Easting.
• Lt. Gen McMaster also received a PhD in history from the University of North Carolina and has written a book titled, “Dereliction of Duty”.
• Lt. Gen McMaster, who is currently serving as the director of the Army’s Capabilities Integration Center, is the second active-duty military officer to take the post.
• Before him, Gen. Colin Powell served in the role during the final years of the Reagan administration.
