  • On March 26th, 2018, the ‘National Conference on Down Syndrome’ was held in New Delhi.
  • It was organized by the National Trust under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
  • On this occasion a book titled ‘Twilight’s Children’ was released on the life of a person suffering from Down syndrome.
  • Down Syndrome is a chromosomal condition associated with intellectual and learning disabilities. Delayed development and behavioural problems are often reported in children with it.
  • Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal abnormality, resulting when an individual possesses three, rather than the usual two, copies of the 21st chromosome.
  • This excess genetic material affects a person’s physical and cognitive development.
  • The objective of this conference was to provide excellent opportunities to the parents to obtain information about latest development in education and skilling and inclusive living of persons with Down Syndrome.
  • Apart from this, evaluation / screening sessions were also organized for children with Down syndrome.
  • On 19th December 2011, the United Nations General Assembly declared to observe 21st March as World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) and since then every year, this day is officially observed by UN to create awareness about people with Down Syndrome.
