  • On 4-5 September, 2018, 28 countries, including India, participated in ‘IOWave 18’, a multilateral Tsunami Mock exercise in the Indian Ocean.
  • The practice was organized by UNESCO Intergovernmental Ocean Commission (IOC) for the first time on the western and eastern shores of the Indian Ocean.
  • The main objective of the exercise was to prepare to deal with the tsunami, evaluate the evacuation process of the people and to improve coordination in the respective areas.
  • Under the practice, the interaction between the National Tsunami Warning Center (NTWC) and the Local Disaster Management Offices was also examined.
  • Under this, it was also practiced to remove more than 125000 people in the coastal areas of Odisha, Andaman, Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Gujarat and Goa.
  • The Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) is headquartered in Hyderabad. It works under the Central Earth Science Ministry. INCOIS is responsible for sustained ocean observations and constant improvements through systematic and focused research.
