Related Facts:

  • On October 27, 2017, Catalonia province declared itself independent from Spain after getting majority by the provincial parliament in favor of independence.
  • In the provincial parliament of 135 seats, 70 votes were in favor of independence and 10 votes in the opposition.
  • The opposition did not participate in this voting.
  • Catalonia is financially strong and has about 20 percent of Spain’s national income.
  • It is significant that in order to become independent from Spain, a referendum was held in Catalonia on October 1, 2017, which was declared as unconstitutional by the Spanish court.
  • In this referendum, 43 percent of the voters took part in which 90 percent of the votes were in favor of independence and 10 percent in opposition.
  • After passing the proposal with majority in the provincial parliament, the parliament of Spain ended the autonomy of Catalonia, which would now have direct control of the Spanish government in Catalonia.
  • Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy dismissed Catalonia leader Carlos Puedemont and his cabinet.
