- On May 24, 2017, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports (Independent Charge) Vijay Goel announced “Adopt a Slum” campaign to mark completion of three years of the BJP Government at the center.
- Its aim is to initiate development works in slums and solve the problems of people residing in these settlements.
- A Slum Youth Race / Marathon was organized on May 26, 2017, in view of the commencement of this campaign.
- This campaign was started by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports with the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan.
- NSS, Public school, Rotary Club etc. will be able to discharge the role of associate in this campaign.
- It is notable that Vijay Goyal has adopted Indira Basti of Timarpur area under this campaign.
- On this occasion, a booklet was released in connection with the campaign and the entire process.
- Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan will adopt slums in all 11 districts and work with the youth volunteers to develop these settlements.
- On May 26, 2017, ‘Slum Youth Rally’ was organized at 6.00 am at Shankar Lal Hall, University of Delhi.
- Other such marathons will be organized in Wazirpur, Model Town, Adarsh Nagar, Chandni Chowk, Buradi and many other areas.
