  • On February 20th, 2018, The Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation organized a “Regional Conference of Southern States on Water Resources” at Taj Vivanta, Begumpet, Hyderabad.
  • The conference will be chaired by Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, MoS, WR, RD & GR and Parliamentary Affairs.
  • Six southern states namely, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Puduchery, Karnataka, Kerala and Telangana will be represented by their Ministers, Principal Secretaies and Engineer-in-Chiefs of Water Resources.
  • The objective of the conference is to discuss pending issues of water resources and inter-state issues.
  • These would include issues related to the implementation of the latest orders of the Supreme Court on sharing of Cauvery waters, Mullai Periyar Dam, interlinking of rivers like Godavari-Cauvery and notification of jurisdiction of Krishna and Godavari Management Boards, Parambikulam Aliyar projects, Pollavaram project and other interstate issues.

  • India is the largest producer of banana in the world with 29.7 million tonnes from an area of 0.88 million hectares with a productivity of 37 MT/ha.
  • Although India accounts for only 15.5per cent in area, its contribution in the world’s production is 25.58per cent.
  • It is predicted that with ever-increasing demand, 60 million tonnes of banana will be needed to meet the domestic demand in 2050.
