  • World Breastfeeding Week is being observed throughout the world during 1-7 August, 2017.
  • The theme of the World Breastfeeding Week in 2017 is ‘Sustaining Breastfeeding Together’.
  • It is worth mentioning that it is celebrated in the first week of August every year to encourage and support breastfeeding.
  • Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has started the program ‘MAA: Mother’s Absolute Affection’ at the national level to promote breastfeeding.
  • In addition, “National Guidelines on Lactation Management Centres in Public Health Facilities” have been recently released to facilitate establishment of lactation management centres for ensuring that the sick and pre-term babies are fed with safe human breast milk.
  • Breastfeeding is an important efficient and cost-effective intervention promoting child survival and health. Breastfeeding within an hour of birth could prevent 20% of the newborn deaths.
  • Infants who are not breastfed are 15 times more likely to die from pnuemonia and 11 times more likely to die from diarrhoea than children who are exclusively breastfed, which are two leading causes of death in children under-five years of age.
  • As per recent data, initial breastfeeding has been nearly doubled in last decade. i.e from 23.4 per cent to 41.6 per cent (NFHs-3, 2005-06 and 4, 2015-16).

  • From October 1, 2017, the Aadhaar number will be required for the purpose of establishing the identity of the deceased for the purpose of Death registration.
  • Registrar General India , Ministry of Home Affairs made the Aadhaar mandatory for Death Certificate through notification dated August 4, 2017.
  • It will provide an effective method to prevent identity fraud, help recording the identity of the deceased person and will obviate the need for producing multiple documents to prove the identity of the deceased person.
  • This provision shall come into effect immediately for residents of all States except J&K, Assam & Meghalaya for which a date will be notified separately.
  • The RGI, in exercise of powers conferred under Section 3(3) of the Registration of Birth and Death Act, 1969, directed that the Aadhaar number will be required for the purpose of establishing the identity of the deceased for the purpose of Death registration.
  • Notably, Section 57 of the Aadhaar Act 2016 permits the use of Aadhaar number for establishing the identity of an individual for any purpose pursuant to any law or any contract to this effect.
  • The registration of births and deaths are being done under the provisions of Registration of Births and Deaths (RBD) Act, 1969 and the corresponding Rules made thereunder by the State Governments.
  • Importantly, the office of the RGI is the central authority to coordinate and unify the activities of Chief Registrar of birth and deaths of States/UT’s in respect of registration of births and deaths.

  • On August 3, 2017, the Central Government appointed senior IAS officer Mohammad Mustafa as the new Chairman and Managing Director of the SIDBI (Small Industries Development Bank of India).
  • His appointment has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet for a period of three years.
  • Mr. Mustafa is a 1995 batch IAS officer and was Joint Secretary in the Department of Financial Services (DFS) in the Finance Ministry.
  • Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) was set up on April 2, 1990 under an Act of Indian Parliament. It acts as the Principal Financial Institution for the Promotion, Financing and Development of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) sector and for Co-ordination of the functions of the institutions engaged in similar activities.
  • MSME sector is an important pillar of Indian economy as it contributes greatly to the growth of Indian economy with a vast network of around 5.1 crore units, creating employment of about 11.7 crore, manufacturing more than 6,000 products, contributing about 45% to manufacturing output and about 40% of exports in terms of value, about 37% of GDP.
  • SIDBI strives to address the financial and non-financial gaps in MSME eco-system.
  • As on March 31, 2016, SIDBI has made cumulative disbursements of about `4.50 lakh crore benefitting about 350 lakh persons.
